**Domestic Violence Defined**
Domestic violence is an ongoing experience of physical, mental and/or sexual abuse in the home, associated with increased isolation from the outside world and limited personal freedom and accessibility to resources. It permeates all levels of our society and all areas of the country. The problem is not unique to one particular social or economic group or region. Nor is it restricted to any one sex or age group. Victims come from all types of homes, even the very best of families. Family violence has shattered the lives of people of all ages, representing every occupation and profession. In the U.S. a woman is abused every 15 seconds Nearly one quarter of all the women in the US -- more than 12 million -- will be abused by a partner during their lives. Domestic violence cost the U.S. $5 to $10 billion a year in health care. It is responsible for 192,000 assaults, 21,000 hospitalizations, 39,900 emergency room visits. Of husbands who beat their wives, 47% do so three or more times a year. 40% of abused women are beaten while pregnant.
